The Alcatel 1662 SM is a high-density, carrier-class SDH/SONET multiservice transport platform designed to deliver reliable and scalable connectivity across metro and regional networks. Purpose-built for environments requiring both high-capacity and service flexibility, it provides seamless transport for legacy TDM services alongside emerging Ethernet and packet-based applications.
With support for STM-1/4/16/64 and equivalent SONET rates (OC-3/12/48/192), the 1662 SM enables efficient grooming and aggregation of traffic, offering powerful cross-connect capabilities and integrated protection mechanisms to ensure high availability. Its modular architecture allows operators to scale bandwidth and service types as needed, making it ideal for converged network environments handling mobile backhaul, enterprise access, and backbone aggregation.
The 1662 SM also features a robust set of Ethernet over SDH capabilities—including GFP, VCAT, and LCAS—enabling operators to deliver cost-effective Ethernet services over traditional transport infrastructure. Combined with advanced traffic management, synchronization support, and compatibility with DWDM systems, it serves as a future-proof solution for evolving network demands.
Carritech supports the Alcatel 1662 SM with a full range of services, including spare part supply, repairs, and technical support, helping operators maintain and extend the value of their network investments. With proven field reliability and global deployment, the 1662 SM continues to be a trusted platform in modern optical transport networks.

The Alcatel 1662 SM is a compact yet powerful multiservice synchronous transport platform designed to operate in both SDH and SONET environments. It supports optical interfaces ranging from STM-1 to STM-64 (equivalent to OC-3 to OC-192), making it suitable for deployment in access, metro, and regional core networks. The system offers a fully non-blocking cross-connect matrix that enables efficient grooming of both high-order and low-order signals—up to VC-4/STS-1 and VC-12/VT levels respectively—ensuring maximum bandwidth utilization across the network.
The platform supports a broad range of tributary interfaces including E1, T1, E3, DS3, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and storage interfaces such as Fibre Channel, ESCON, and FICON. Its modular chassis design allows hot-swappable interface cards, enabling flexible service configurations and in-service upgrades without impacting existing traffic.
A key feature of the 1662 SM is its ability to transport Ethernet services over SDH/SONET using industry-standard technologies like Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS). This makes it an ideal solution for operators transitioning to packet-based services while still relying on a traditional transport backbone.
Synchronization is handled via internal or external timing sources, with full support for Synchronization Status Messaging (SSM), ensuring accurate and reliable timing across the network. The system also includes built-in protection mechanisms such as SNCP, MSP 1+1, and various ring protection topologies to guarantee service continuity.
Power is supplied through dual redundant -48V DC inputs, with passive cooling and standard ETSI-compliant rack mounting options. The platform is designed for high reliability in telecom environments and is fully manageable via the Alcatel-Lucent 1350 Optical Management Suite (OMS), which supports SNMP, CLI, and graphical interfaces for remote configuration, fault detection, and performance monitoring.
