The Alcatel 1660 SM R5 represents the latest evolution of Alcatel-Lucent’s optical transport family, designed to deliver high-capacity SDH and packet-based services within a compact and scalable platform. Built on the solid foundation of previous releases, R5 enhances performance with increased switching capacity, expanded interface support, and deeper integration of Ethernet and MPLS technologies, making it a powerful solution for metro core, regional aggregation, and mission-critical backbone networks.
R5 extends the capabilities of the 1660 SM series by providing full STM-64 (10 Gbps) transport, a non-blocking cross-connect matrix, and advanced support for converged services across legacy TDM and next-generation packet domains. It enables efficient delivery of voice, data, and video services on a single infrastructure, supporting applications such as mobile backhaul, enterprise connectivity, utility communications, and wholesale transport.
With improved packet handling features, the 1660 SM R5 offers Layer 2 switching, VLAN and Q-in-Q support, traffic policing, and QoS-aware forwarding, alongside SDH transport features like GFP, VCAT, and LCAS. This enables operators to offer differentiated Ethernet services over SDH, while ensuring interoperability with existing networks and future-proof scalability.
As with earlier versions, the R5 release is fully compatible with the Alcatel-Lucent 1350 OMS for centralized network management. It provides robust protection schemes, synchronization compliance (SSM), and power-efficient operation, making it a carrier-grade platform built for reliability and long-term operation.
At Carritech, we provide full lifecycle support for the Alcatel 1660 SM R5, including global spare parts availability, expert repair services, and engineering support. Whether you’re deploying new services or maintaining a legacy network, Carritech ensures the long-term performance and sustainability of your 1660 SM infrastructure.

The Alcatel 1660 SM R5 is a high-capacity optical multi-service provisioning platform (MSPP) designed to transport both SDH and packet-based services across metro and regional networks. It supports transmission rates from STM-1 (155 Mbps) up to STM-64 (10 Gbps), with a fully non-blocking cross-connect matrix capable of switching up to 60 Gbps of high-order (VC-4) traffic and up to 40 Gbps of low-order (VC-12/VC-3) signals. These capabilities allow for granular service aggregation, traffic grooming, and highly flexible bandwidth management.
The system features a modular chassis architecture that accommodates a wide variety of plug-in interface cards. Supported interfaces include E1, T1, E3, DS3, Fast Ethernet (10/100Base-T), Gigabit Ethernet (1000Base-X), Fibre Channel, FICON, ESCON, V.35, and G.703. The platform also provides native support for colored optical interfaces (STM-16/64), enabling seamless integration into DWDM systems without requiring external transponders.
The R5 release enhances packet functionality with built-in Layer 2 switching capabilities, enabling the transport of Ethernet and MPLS-based services. It supports key technologies such as GFP (Generic Framing Procedure), VCAT (Virtual Concatenation), and LCAS (Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme), alongside advanced Ethernet features like VLAN tagging, Q-in-Q encapsulation, traffic policing, and service differentiation for QoS enforcement.
Synchronization is achieved through internal and external sources, with full support for Synchronization Status Messaging (SSM), ensuring reliable clock distribution throughout the network. Protection features include Multiplex Section Protection (MSP 1+1), Sub-Network Connection Protection (SNCP), and ring protection, all designed to ensure carrier-grade service continuity and fault resilience.
Power is supplied via dual -48V DC inputs with redundant distribution and per-card DC/DC conversion for fault isolation. The system is housed in a standard ETSI-compliant rack, suitable for central offices or controlled environment enclosures. Passive cooling is used to maintain energy efficiency and reduce maintenance overhead.
Management and configuration are handled through the Alcatel-Lucent 1350 Optical Management Suite (OMS), offering remote access via CLI, SNMP, and a graphical user interface. This allows for streamlined provisioning, real-time monitoring, alarm handling, and firmware upgrades across complex network environments.
