About the Alcatel 1692 MSE

The Alcatel 1692 MSE (Metrospan Edge) is a cost-efficient, compact Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) platform designed for metro access, enterprise, and small-city transport applications. It supports up to 8 CWDM wavelengths in a single network element, operating passively without onboard power consumption, making it ideal for minimal-infrastructure deployments across point-to-point or ring networks.

Designed for versatility, the 1692 MSE supports multiple deployment modes including line terminal, optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), and CPE configurations. Depending on the setup, each OADM node can add or drop one or more channels—commonly including 1310 nm services—while passing through express CWDM wavelengths along the link.

Client signal support spans 125 Mbps to 2.67 Gbps, covering typical access rates such as STM-1, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other asynchronous protocols. The system is standardized for CWDM grid compliance (wavelengths at ~1470 nm, 1490 nm, 1510 nm, 1530 nm, 1550 nm, 1570 nm, 1590 nm, 1610 nm), operating reliably across extended industrial temperature ranges without active wavelength control.

The 1692 MSE is essentially passive, drawing no power in its basic configuration. Its durability, small form factor, and low maintenance requirements make it especially well-suited for edge-of-network access deployment—particularly in remote or space-constrained sites.

Key Features of the Alcatel 1692 MSE

  • Passive CWDM Multiplexing
Supports up to 8 CWDM channels over a single fiber pair without the need for external power, reducing operational costs and simplifying installation.

  • Compact and Scalable Design
Small form factor ideal for access networks, enterprise sites, or space-constrained environments, with modular options for expansion.

  • Flexible Deployment Configurations
Can be used as a line terminal, optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), or customer premises equipment (CPE) in point-to-point or ring topologies.

  • Protocol-Independent Operation
Handles a wide range of client signals from 125 Mbps to 2.67 Gbps, including Gigabit Ethernet, STM-1, Fibre Channel, and other asynchronous traffic.

  • CWDM Grid Compliance
Operates across standard ITU-T CWDM wavelengths (1470–1610 nm), supporting seamless integration into multi-vendor CWDM networks.

  • Extended Temperature Range
Designed for industrial environments with robust performance over wide temperature conditions, suitable for outdoor and remote enclosures.

  • Low Maintenance Requirements
Passive operation with no active electronics minimizes points of failure and eliminates the need for regular power-related servicing.

  • Service Transparency
Allows transport of various protocols without requiring protocol conversion or service-layer awareness.

  • Cost-Efficient Metro Access Expansion
Ideal for carriers and service providers extending fiber capacity at the edge of the network with minimal investment.

Technical Information

The Alcatel 1692 MSE (Metrospan Edge) is a passive CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) platform designed to deliver high-capacity fiber transport in metro access networks. It supports up to 8 CWDM wavelengths per fiber pair, operating across the standard ITU-T G.694.2 CWDM grid with nominal channel spacings of 20 nm, ranging from 1470 nm to 1610 nm, plus support for the 1310 nm window for legacy transmission compatibility.

Each channel supports client signal bit rates from 125 Mbps up to 2.67 Gbps, allowing the transparent transport of a wide variety of services, including STM-1, STM-4, STM-16, Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and other asynchronous or protocol-independent traffic types. These characteristics make the 1692 MSE well-suited for broadband access, enterprise networking, and mobile backhaul applications.

The platform is fully passive, requiring no power supply or active cooling. Its modular design allows for flexible deployment as a line terminal multiplexer, optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), or as a pass-through node in a point-to-point, ring, or linear topology. OADM units can be configured to add/drop one or multiple CWDM channels while allowing express channels to continue along the fiber path.

The 1692 MSE supports standard SC or LC optical connectors and is available in various housing formats, including 1RU rack-mounted trays, DIN-rail units, or compact enclosures suitable for outdoor cabinets or customer premises equipment (CPE) installations.

It is designed for industrial temperature ranges, typically from –5°C to +65°C, with low insertion loss per channel, and high isolation between wavelengths, ensuring high signal integrity over extended distances without the need for electrical regeneration.

Because it is a passive solution, the 1692 MSE does not include onboard management or telemetry. Instead, service monitoring is performed at the transceiver or network element level. It is typically deployed alongside active systems such as the Alcatel 1670 or 1650 series, or customer routers and switches equipped with CWDM optical interfaces.
