About the Alcatel 1670 SM

The Alcatel 1670 SM is a high-density optical multi-service node engineered for metro and core transport applications. It delivers end-to-end services ranging from 140/155 Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet all the way up to 10 Gbps, providing operators with a powerful solution for capacity-hungry network environments.

As a member of Alcatel’s OMSN (Optical Multi-Service Node) family, the 1670 SM combines advanced SDH/SONET transport with data-aware service adaptation. Its integrated ISA (Integrated Service Adapter) modules optimize traffic grooming and bandwidth usage by intelligently mapping client services—such as Gigabit Ethernet—onto the high-order SDH transport matrix.

Designed for national transport backbones and metro/core deployment, the 1670 SM offers scalable high-capacity optical connectivity while minimizing overall network complexity. With direct DWDM compatibility via 2.5 G and 10 G colored STM interfaces, it can seamlessly interface with long-haul systems—making it suitable for intercontinental gateways and high-speed optical rings.

The platform is engineered for reliability with carrier-grade VC‑4-switching capacity and robust protection schemes, enabling continuous service delivery in demanding environments. Full-featured network management architecture provides end-to-end monitoring and control capabilities via a unified suite of tools.

Technical Information

The Alcatel 1670 SM is a high-capacity, multiservice optical transport node designed for metro and core network applications. It supports a wide range of transmission rates, from 140 Mbps (STM-0/OC-1) up to 10 Gbps (STM-64/OC-192), and is capable of aggregating and transporting legacy and next-generation services on a single platform. The system features a high-order, non-blocking VC-4 cross-connect matrix, enabling flexible traffic grooming and efficient bandwidth utilization.

The platform includes Integrated Service Adapter (ISA) modules that enable direct adaptation of packet-based services—such as Fast and Gigabit Ethernet—into the SDH/SONET core. These modules support encapsulation techniques like GFP (Generic Framing Procedure) and mapping via VCAT and LCAS, allowing Ethernet services to be delivered over traditional transport layers with dynamic bandwidth adjustment.

The 1670 SM supports a variety of interfaces including PDH (E1/T1/E3/DS3), Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel, alongside standard SDH/SONET optical interfaces (STM-1 to STM-64 / OC-3 to OC-192). It also provides native support for colored optical interfaces, enabling direct integration into DWDM systems without the need for external transponders. This makes it ideal for use in long-haul and gateway applications.

Carrier-grade protection mechanisms are built into the system, including MSP 1+1, SNCP, and various ring protection configurations to ensure uninterrupted service in the event of faults. Synchronization is achieved via internal and external clock sources with full support for SSM (Synchronization Status Messaging), ensuring accurate timing across the network.

The system is modular and scalable, with hot-swappable cards housed in a rack-mounted chassis compliant with ETSI and ANSI standards. Power is supplied via redundant -48V DC feeds, and passive or active cooling options are available depending on deployment requirements.

Network management is handled through the Alcatel-Lucent 1350 Optical Management Suite (OMS), providing centralized control, remote provisioning, alarm management, and performance monitoring. This ensures efficient operation and integration into broader multi-vendor environments.
