The Marconi OMS 1664 (Optical MultiService Metro‑Edge) is a carrier-grade SDH add/drop multiplexer engineered for deployment in metro and regional network layers. As part of the OMS 1600 family, the OMS 1664 delivers flexible transport and switching for mixed-service environments, enabling seamless delivery of TDM and packet-based traffic such as Ethernet, PDH, and SDH—all within one compact chassis.
What sets the OMS 1664 apart is its highly adaptive architecture: it supports STM‑1, STM‑4, STM‑16, and STM‑64 line interfaces depending on switch and line card configurations. With a 128×128 non-blocking VC‑12-level switch matrix, it can support high port density and granular service routing over a single rack unit, dramatically simplifying network topology.
The platform’s versatility shines in its support for both legacy and emerging services—capable of aggregating up to 120 STM‑1 tributary channels or housing up to 504 × 2 Mb/s ports in one shelf. For packet-centric traffic, it supports Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Private LAN (EVPLAN), VLAN-aware bridging, RSTP, and LACP functionality, enabling advanced Layer‑2 services and VPNs.
Carrier-grade performance is supported by SDH protection mechanisms including MSP, SNCP, and MS‑SPRING, along with robust card and path-level resilience for five‑nine availability. The design enables in-service upgrades (e.g., from STM‑16 to STM‑64) without downtime by swapping line cards and upgradeable switch planes.
For synchronized transport, the OMS 1664 accepts SDH clocks, external timing sources, or internal free-run operation—all compliant with G.703/704 standards—for robust support of mobile backhaul and time-sensitive services.
