The Alcatel 1640 WM is a legacy high-capacity wavelength-multiplexing system designed to support the expansive needs of optical networks. Adhering to G.692 ITU-T standards, the 1640 WM functions both as an Optical Terminal Multiplexer for point-to-point connections and as an Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer for more complex multi-point applications. Its ability to handle up to 1600 Gb/s traffic over a pair of fibers in the C optical band showcases its significant role in historical network expansions, providing a foundation for further upgrades and capacity enhancements in the C, L, and S optical bands.
We are able to offer the following support for this product:
Compatibility: The system is compatible with a range of fiber types including G.652, G.653, G.654, and G.655, ensuring broad application across different network infrastructures.
Capacity: Initially, the 1640 WM supports up to 1600 Gb/s traffic in the C band, with potential expansion to 160 channels using C and L bands and up to 240 channels with the addition of the S band.
Bit Rates: It accommodates synchronous bit rates from STM-16 to STM-256, including STM-64, and asynchronous rates from 100 Mb/s to 1.7 Gb/s.
Amplification: The system’s optical amplification relies on two-stage in-line amplifiers, suitable for long multi-span applications exceeding 900 km on a 0.25 dB/km fiber.
Add/Drop Functionality: Features 8 ports per site for Optical Add/Drop or Dispersion Compensating Unit in the in-line amplifier interstage, enhancing network flexibility.
Network Management: Managed through Alcatel’s remote and centralized system, ensuring efficient control and monitoring.
Modularity: The 1640 WM’s design is compact and modular, consisting of three types of shelves that can be used in both terminal and line stations, fitting into Alcatel ETSI-compliant racks.
Forward Error Correction: Includes FEC functionality across all synchronous versions of Wavelength Adapters for improved performance and per-channel monitoring.
Software Configurable Channels: The Add/Drop functionality is software configurable for each channel, providing tailored network solutions.
Extended Reach: Capable of transmitting over distances more than 900 km without the need for optical-electrical conversion, thanks to its advanced line stations and amplification technology.
The Alcatel 1640 WM has served as a crucial component in the development of optical networks, offering service providers a versatile and scalable solution to accommodate growing data traffic demands while maintaining the reliability and efficiency expected of legacy telecommunications equipment.
