
The Siemens EWSD is one of the furthest-travelled systems in telecommunications history. Siemens’ carrier business was folded into the Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture in 2007, and the EWSD product line wound down as the industry pivoted to softswitches and IP. But networks did not pivot overnight. In many countries, EWSD exchanges remain the platform of record for the remaining PSTN estate — including lines serving alarm circuits, rural communities and business services that have not yet migrated.
